YWCA South Hampton Roads has been on the front lines of the biggest issues of the day for over 115 years, with our focus on eliminating racism and empowering women.
As the largest domestic and sexual violence service provider and trusted equity and justice partner in South Hampton Roads, we offer diverse volunteer, intern, and outreach opportunities within the community promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.
Volunteering at YWCA South Hampton Roads is a two-step process:
- Application – Complete a brief application and our Volunteer Engagement Coordinator will follow-up and move you to the next step to begin your volunteer journey with us!
- Volunteer Screening – YWCA South Hampton Roads works in partnership with Volunteer Hampton Roads for screening of all volunteers. The Sterling Volunteers system allows volunteers to maintain a profile that is transferable for volunteering beyond YWCA South Hampton Roads. How You Can Help
Non-Technical Volunteers:
Non-Technical volunteers with YWCA South Hampton Roads are not required to go through specialized training prior to service and will not have client interaction.

Trained Volunteers:
After an initial interview, volunteers will attend our 16-hour Onboarding Training as well as 24 hours of department-specific advanced training prior to service. Trained Volunteers with direct client interaction require a successful background check.

Visiting Our Shelter?
If you are volunteering at the Emergency Shelter, please download and complete the Visitor Confidentiality Agreement before your visit. Signed agreements can be emailed to volunteer@ywca-shr.org.
Intern Opportunities
Trained Internship Participants:
YWCA South Hampton Roads offers internships to undergraduate and graduate students. Interns are subject to background checks and have direct client interaction. If you are interested in pursuing practicum or internship opportunities, please apply at least two months in advance of the semester start date, as our programs are highly competitive and fill quickly.
